Mariachi los Gatos Salvajes Headed to State Competition for Second Year
EL PASO, TX – Fabens High School mariachi Los Gatos Salvajes will be heading to state competition after earning a division 1 all-around at the West Texas UIL Region Mariachi Contest held at Eastwood High School on Saturday, January 27, 2024. The mariachi group was established eighteen months ago.
Mariachi director Natalie Carrasco stated she is very honored to work with such dedicated students. “They showed up every day and made sure to learn from it, and their hard work paid off. This win is about them and how hard they were willing to work for it,” she added.
Los Gatos Salvajes president Rene Montañez (senior) stated, “Today was a perfect presentation, everything was in perfect synchrony, the movement on stage was good, the voices were in tune, harmony and melody played with confidence and skills. The mariachi did what they were told and more. Obviously, there are things we can improve on, but I think we have enough time to make those small adjustments and improve even more. The state competition this year looks very promising.”
Dr. Aguayo, Fabens High School principal, said “Our students continue to shine, demonstrating what it means to be #SmallTownTough (district hashtag). The commitment to the mariachi program from all stakeholders to include our teachers, students, their parents, trustees, and superintendent is what drives the success we witnessed today. Because of their efforts each and every day, we can hear them #WildcatsROAR (Fabens High School hashtag).”
Interim superintendent Martin Torres was present in support of the Wildcats. “I am so proud of all their accomplishments. It is a great pleasure to have served them every step of the way and an even greater one to watch them perform,” he said.
Los Gatos Salvajes will compete at the 2024 UIL State Mariachi Festival on Thursday, February 22, through Saturday, February 24, at the Seguin HS Performing Arts Center in Seguin, TX.
