2020-2021 SCHOOL REOPENING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
General Questions
-
If I choose one option and want to change the choice later in the year, can I make a switch?
Yes. You will have the opportunity to make a switch at the end of each grading period.
-
What if most families choose the traditional option? Would there have to be changes to accommodate social distancing or will there be a limit of how many students can select the traditional option?
We will be able to provide instruction to all students in whichever format their families choose. We will also comply with all mandates regarding social distancing as well as health and hygiene protocols.
-
How will you address social emotional or mental health concerns?
Counselors are available to support students academically, socially, and emotionally and can provide mental health support or resources for families who may be struggling emotionally. Access to schedule a meeting with an FISD counselor or to find a list of local counseling based resources can be found on the district website. Additionally, Fabens ISD has received a matching grant to provide EduGuide, which is an online Social Emotional Learning (SEL) tool for students in grades 4-12 that can be accessed from home or school with weekly lessons and opportunities for students to discuss SEL topics with their teachers.
-
How will the Early College, PTECH, and T-STEM High School programs be impacted?
These pathways will still be available. Dual credit courses offered by UTEP and EPCC faculty will be online for the Fall semester and FHS online facilitators will support students through these courses.
-
Will there be STAAR testing in the 2020-2021 school year?
Yes. According to TEA, the STAAR testing calendar has been updated and reflects longer online testing windows. Fabens ISD is committed to preparing students for these state assessments and will provide additional instructional interventions for students who need that support.
-
Does Fabens ISD plan to change its truancy or attendance policies?
According to TEA guidance, truancy and attendance policies are required to continue to be in place for all school districts, no matter the setting of instruction. Fabens ISD will continue to the current policies and is proud to offer virtual instruction that will meet the needs of students whether they are on campus or online.

What precautions will be in place on campus?
We will implement increased signage around campuses promoting disease mitigation strategies, increased cleaning and sanitation practices (PreventX specialized cleaning solution), as well as frequent reminders of hand washing and social distancing.
Student interactions will be limited and breakfast and lunch will be delivered to classrooms. Fabens ISD will follow the guidance provided by local and state agencies.
Temperatures will be taken daily for all students and staff.
-
Will students and staff be required to wear masks?
We will comply with the mandates of El Paso County regarding requiring face coverings.
-

Yes, transportation will be provided for all who qualify. Bus transportation is also provided for special needs students when required by the student's ARD and IEP.
-
Will social distancing be observed on buses, and how will seating arrangements be determined?
Students will be assigned specific seats, and a seating chart will be maintained by the bus driver. Students are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings and use hand sanitizer prior to boarding the school bus.
Students are required to remain seated at all times and keep their hands and arms to themselves. Students should not touch each other or share any items.
School buses will be cleaned and disinfected twice per day. Additional bus routes and staggered schedules will allow for reduced numbers of students on a bus at one time.
-
How will schools monitor bathrooms and other commons areas?
All areas of the campus will be monitored frequently to ensure there is no student crowding. Classrooms will be assigned a specific bathroom to limit the number of students in any given area. The restrooms will be cleaned frequently. Signage reminding students and staff about handwashing, social distancing, and infection prevention will be posted throughout the school and in areas mentioned above.

-
What happens if a student or a teacher tests positive for COVID-19? Will the entire classroom have to quarantine and enroll in virtual school? What if multiple classrooms and students/staff are impacted?
When notification of a possible exposure occurs, FISD, in coordination with local health authorities, will begin contact tracing and complete a thorough risk assessment.
-
Will grading policies change if my child participates in virtual or traditional school settings?
Based on TEA guidelines school grading policies for remote student work must be consistent with those used before COVID-19 for on-campus assignments. Any virtual environment, by choice or by governmental decision, will follow the same grading guidelines as in-person instruction, as set forth in our handbook and academic guides.
In turn, the grading policy in place on the campus will continue in a virtual environment and will not move to other systems such as pass/fail.

Students who select virtual school will be required to attend and participate in class daily, and instruction will be led by a teacher. In the spring of last year, students’ assignments were based on instructional support, however, new guidelines dictate that lessons will be instructional in nature. Virtual school this year will be a full course load of instruction and assignments that is comparable to what students who are attending school in-person will be required to complete. As a reminder, STAAR testing will resume this school year. Teachers delivering virtual instruction will receive additional training and support in digital teaching strategies and the use of online curriculum for virtual school.

How will virtual school be staffed?
Schools will continue to be staffed based upon student enrollment. The virtual campus versus traditional onsite staffing will be determined by enrollment and student course selections.
-
How will technology be distributed?
Technology will be distributed from students’ home campuses.
-
Will daily attendance be taken?
Yes. TEA requires that attendance is taken daily in virtual instruction. If there are any connectivity issues please call your child's campus the same day to make arrangement for instruction and be counted present.
