Representatives from UTEP engineering, science and medical programs were here last month to kickstart the collaboration between UTEP, Fabens High School and the Fabens Airport. The airport will become an aerospace technology park and will be transformed into three facilities where UTEP students will research innovation projects.
Eventually, Fabens students will be able to collaborate with UTEP engineers as well. During the assembly in the Wildcat Den, Fabens students met with UTEP representatives to find out more about the science programs. Students also had the chance to meet with UTEP medical departments, visit different booth, and test out technology such as flight simulators.
''Fabens ISD teachers would be able to use the airport as a research lab for student projects and summer camps, exposing our elementary students, all the way to high school students, to a university such as UTEP. It is important to create a culture and mentality that a higher education is attainable,” science teacher Mrs. Banuelas said.
Also in the Den, three top seniors were awarded $60,000 worth of scholarships to the University of Texas at El Paso. The students received the check during the assembly. The scholarship money will cover most of their tuition should they decide to attend UTEP.
