Good Morning Fabens ISD!

Hope you had a great weekend!

The first TAKS session this past week went extremely well. All campuses reported a smooth operation and our students worked hard. We appreciate all the work and preparation in administering the first phase of TAKS 2010!

Spring sports are underway at both the high school and middle school. This past weekend the following Fabens Middle School teams garnered various awards:

*7th grade girls Champions Lower Valley Tennis
*8th grade girls Champions Lower Valley Tennis
*7th grade girls 1st place Mountain View Track Meet
*8th grade girls 2nd place Mountain View Track Meet
*7th and 8th grade boys 4th place Mountain View Track Meet

At the high school, both softball and baseball teams are off to a good start. Thanks to all the student athletes and coaches for their hard work in representing the Wildcats!

A big “Wildcat” shout out to all the high school students who were a part of the “TAKS Pep Rally” for the O’Donnell students. The O’Donnell students were very appreciative and had a good time getting fired up.

Fabens Elementary School celebrated “Dr. Seuss” day on Friday, March 5. 2010. Teachers and students wore their pajamas to school, and many visitors participated by reading “Dr. Seuss” books to the students. I am sure everyone had a wonderful time.

Special Olympics are scheduled for this week. This is a exciting event for our students and staff. If you have a chance to attend, please drop by and share the excitement of our special athletes.

Good Morning Fabens ISD!

Hope you had a great weekend!

March is upon us! It is TAKS TIME again! All across the state of Texas, the level of anxiety is up as school districts are measured by these high stakes state assessments. These past few months our students and teachers have been working hard to prepare not only for this test, but to prepare our students for the challenges in competing in a global, digital environment. We know you have worked tirelessly, and we expect our students to do their very best on this assessment.

Last week, I recognized all our UIL student participants for their involvement in the various activities. In addition to meeting their academic requirements, our students devote countless hours to develop and sharpen their skills. We appreciate their efforts and their involvement in these activities. This past weekend we had several activities which provided our student/athletes opportunities to compete as well as develop and enhance relationships, responsibility, sportsmanship and leadership.

This past weekend we hosted the Annual Cotton Relays and the Wildcat Baseball Tournament. Thanks to all the teachers, coaches, auxiliary employees and volunteers for their time and service in making these events possible. In addition to their teaching assignments, our coaches contribute countless hours to provide our student/athletes the opportunities to compete in UIL activities. We appreciate the time and service of educating our students in both the classroom and on the fields of competition. Also, to our community volunteers and Wildcat Booster Club members, thanks for your help with the track meet and baseball tournament.

Congratulations to our Lady Cat’s softball team! They won the championship at the Chaparral Softball Tournament beating Clint Mountain View by a score of 4-2. Also, kudos to the Wildcat baseball team as they beat Tornillo by a score of 11-2 to win Consolation. I did not receive official track meet results, but I did get to see our Lady Cats and Wildcats compete successfully in several races.

A big WILDCAT SALUTE to the Fabens Elementary students!!! In their recent Pennies for Patients fundraiser, they did an awesome job collecting a total of $4,700.06. Because of their support and compassion for others, they were able to donate this money to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We are very proud of you “Little Wildcats”.

Lamar University – Any Fabens Independent School District teacher interested in obtaining an online master’s degree from Lamar University may contact them at www.stateu.com/lamar/ac Through March 15, 2010, Lamar University is offering Fabens ISD teachers a $500 tuition grant toward earning a master’s degree.

Latest news from Fabens High School HOSA Program. Three Fabens HOSA Teams went to Amarillo, Texas, to compete in the Area IV Conference. Ms. JImenez and Mr. Evans, HOSA sponsors, are proud to announce that our students did an excellent job at this competition. Two of the three teams placed: the CERT Team (Community Emergency Response Team) composed of Victor Rios and Brenda Hernandez placed 4th; the EMT Team (Emergency Medical Technology) composed of Adriana Ochoa and Yajaira Polanco advanced to state by placing 3rd and Kevin Lettunich placed 4th in Medical Terminology. Great Job Fabens High School Wildcats!!

Shakira adds voice to Spanish We Are the World
Shakira and Ricky Martin are among the artists adding their voices to a Spanish-language adaptation of “We Are the World” to raise money for Haiti earthquake relief.
The song will first air Monday on Univision’s “The Cristina Show.” It was produced by Emilio Estefan, Quincy Jones and Univision, under the auspices of the We Are The World Foundation.
The foundation said all proceeds will be used to help Haiti recover from a devastating Jan. 12 quake.
Gloria Estefan penned the adaptation. Other participants include Carlos Santana, Chayanne, David Archuleta, Juan Luis Guerra and Juanes.
The original “We Are the World” in 1985 raised more than $30 million for African hunger relief. Some 80 artists recently recorded a 25th anniversary version benefiting Haiti.

Small quake hits US-Mexico border near SoCal city

A magnitude-3.9 earthquake has rattled the California-Mexico border, but there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred shortly after 7 a.m. Friday and was centered 16 miles southeast of Calexico, a California city of 40,000 people across the border from Mexicali, Mexico.
In December, a magnitude-5.8 temblor struck the area, forcing hospitals to evacuate in Mexicali. The quake did not cause any major property damage or injuries.

Teen accused of setting fire near lake havasu city

Fire investigators say a teenager is responsible for setting a brush fire Tuesday night in Lake Havasu City in western Arizona.Lake Havasu City officials say a 14-year-old playing with a lighter accidentally ignited a discarded couch that had been left in a brushy area just south of the city’s Rotary Park.Authorities say the teenager and other kids left after putting the fire out. However, windy conditions reignited the couch and nearby brush.The fire quickly spread and fire crews from Lake Havasu City and Desert Hills responded.Lake Havasu City fire Investigators were able to identify the juveniles involved.The 14-year-old was referred to the Mohave County Juvenile Probation Department.
