Thankgiving 2017

One could argue that starting Thanksgiving meal at 10 a.m. at the Fabens Elementary cafeteria is a little early. However, for the community members who wanted to spend Thursday morning, the week before the school district goes on Thanksgiving break, with their children at the campus, it’s also secondary to what was obviously more important: being with their children. And this point, at least to the 750 family members who purchased a ticket, is inarguable.
Parents began to line up as early as 9:15 a.m. as they waited anxiously to see their little ones walk down the hallway toward the cafeteria. The boys wore their ties and vests; the girls put on their Sunday best. As Ms. Joanne Olivas, the school’s cafeteria manager, opened the doors for the families to find their seats, parents wanted to take a look at their children lining up to get their plate of turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie before they joined them for the limited time they had together. During that time, there were enough pictures taken and uploaded to Facebook or Instagram to commemorate the moment because, in the end, that’s what this school wanted to provide to this community: a moment to commemorate.
As the full stomachs made their way back to class, or back home, the day came to a successful and happy ending. Until next year.
